SKETCH |
|
I am a Full Professor at the School of Psychology (before April 2019, the School of Psychology and Artificial Intelligence) at Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands; a Principal Investigator at the Centre for Cognition of the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour; and Research Associate of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen. I earned Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD degrees (all three with highest distinction) in Experimental Psychology from Radboud University. After spending a postdoctoral year (1992-1993) at the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA, I have been a Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen, between 1993-1998 and 1999-2006. From 1998 to 2001, I have held positions as Lecturer in Psychology and Reader in Cognitive Science at the University of Exeter, England. From 2004 to 2009, I coordinated the NWO VICI project "Goal-referenced control of verbal and nonverbal actions" at Radboud University. And from 2013-2018, I was the Director of the Master of Cognitive Neuroscience Program at Radboud University. I have taught many courses, including Theoretical Psychology (since 2008, some 6500 students have taken this course). In my research, I have used response time and accuracy, eye tracking, electrophysiological and hemodynamic neuroimaging, brain stimulation, tractography, imaging genetics, and computational modeling techniques to study language and attention, in both (bilingual) normal and language-impaired populations. Since 2019, I have been slowly phasing out my teaching and research activities because of incurable cancer.
PERSONAL Dutch citizen, born in Cuijk, the Netherlands. Married with Jantine Uilenreef.
We have a son, Yoram, born 26

A.
R. by Yoram (2004) |
Language interacts with other mental abilities, including perception, movement, memory, thought, emotion, and attention. The Attention and Language Performance laboratory seeks to understand the neurocognitive mechanisms of language and its relation to these other abilities, in particular, attention. We examine basic forms of language performance, such as word production (central to our work), comprehension, repetition, and reading. To visit the webpage of the lab, click on the link or icon above. Attention is important when language processes are not fully automatized in language development, when automaticity has been obtained only partially in a second language, or when automaticity is lost due to brain damage in aphasia. Attention is also needed for self-monitoring, through which speakers assess whether planning and performance are consistent with intent, in first and second languages. We study language and attention in healthy (bilingual) adults as well as in typically developing children and children with language impairment, and in (bilingual) adults with aphasia due to stroke or neurodegenerative disease.
Our aim is not only to contribute to a better theoretical understanding of the neurocognitive mechanisms of language and its relation to other cognitive abilities, but also to help improve the diagnosis and treatment of language deficits (e.g., our screening test SYDBAT-NL and therapy app SimpTell for aphasia). We collaborate with the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Royal Dutch Kentalis, the Radboudumc Alzheimer Centre and Parkinson Centre, and the Sint Maartenskliniek.
It is unlikely that we will be able to understand the increasingly complex set of factors that are known to influence attention and language performance, associated deficits, and their remediation, without computational modeling. Therefore, my lab works on a
computationally implemented theory for language performance and its attentional control, developed in close
interaction with empirical work. The theory combines (1) an account of the
various processes underlying (bilingual) word production and its relation with spoken and
visual word recognition, (2) an account of how goals and attention control
perception and production, and (3) an account of self-monitoring and
the relation between self-monitoring and language comprehension. The model that
instantiates the theory, WEAVER++ (WEAVER++ on the web), successfully simulates a wide range of relevant response
time findings, speech errors, brain imaging data, and findings on
impairments (i.e., aphasia). For example, WEAVER++ successfully simulates several classic
data sets obtained with the Stroop task ("the gold standard of attentional measures"), including incongruency, congruency,
reverse Stroop, response set, semantic gradient, time course, stimulus,
spatial, multiple task, manual, bilingual, training, age, and pathological
effects (e.g., in schizophrenia). The
Stroop task requires naming the ink color of a color word, e.g., GREEN, or reading the word aloud (for an interactive
demonstration of the Stroop phenomenon, click on the icon below).
A neurocognitive extension of WEAVER++ is called WEAVER++/ARC (for WEAVER++ Arcuate Repetition and Conversation). This model synthesizes behavioral psycholinguistic, functional neuroimaging, tractographic, and aphasiological evidence. The model has been applied to aphasia due to stroke or neurodegenerative disease, including primary progressive aphasia. Greater understanding of the impairments in primary progressive aphasia has been obtained through computer simulations with WEAVER++/ARC of performance on the screening test SYDBAT (for English) and the SYDBAT-NL (for Dutch), at both group and individual patient levels. The model implements a seminal proposal by Pick (1892, 1908) and modern empirical insights. Click here or on the icon below for more information on this application of the model.
Issues in naming, attentional inhibition, alpha oscillations in the brain, and intelligence have been examined through the Wundt 2.0 computational model. For more information about this model, click on the icon below. A central topic of our work is word finding (in first and second languages), also called word retrieval, lexical access, or word planning. Word-finding difficulties occasionally happen in all speakers and frequently occur in all types of aphasia and developmental language disorder. Word finding and its difficulties may be assessed by measuring the speed and accuracy of picture naming, and deficits may be remediated by training. WEAVER++/ARC addresses treatment effects and explains how attention contributes to successful (bilingual) word retrieval in health and disease.
The classic instrument that physiologist F. C. Donders used to measure, for the first time ever, speech production times was on display in the Anatomical Museum of Radboud University, on temporary loan (from April till June 2018) from the Utrecht University Museum. VOX magazine made a video clip (3 min) on this instrument and the connection with modern neuroimaging, in which I did the explaining. The video also shows how we replicated Donders' classic ki-ki speech repetition experiment, the subjects being my daughter Sterre and myself, while I was in the MRI scanner. We used Donders' original stimulus lists. Click here for the article and video in Vox magazine (in Dutch) and here for the video on Donders' noematachograph and neuroimaging on YouTube (in Dutch, but with English subtitles). Errata for the video: Donders' instrument is called 'noematachograph' (not 'noemotachograph') and the counting of tuning fork waves is done from speech onset of person A to speech onset of person B (and not from offset to onset, as the animation suggests). The name "Willem Wever" comes from a well-known Dutch alliteration: "Wie weet waar Willem Wever woont? Willem Wever woont wijd weg. Wie weet wat Willem Wever weeft?" Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) made more than a dozen paintings of weavers in admiration of their craftsmanship and for the Rembrandtesque clair-obscure effect of the artificial gas-light in which they worked. Shown above are two paintings, made by Van Gogh in 1884, both called "Weaver with loom". More work of Van Gogh on this topic can be found in the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. |
